Angel McCoughtry is a professional basketball player. She played for the Minnesota Lynx of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She was the first overall pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft by the Atlanta Dream and is a six-time WNBA All-Star and two-time WNBA scoring champion. She has also represented the United States in international competitions, winning gold medals at the 2010 and 2018 FIBA World Cups and the 2012 Olympics.

Early life

Angel McCoughtry was born in 1986 in Baltimore, Maryland to Roi and Sharon McCoughtry. She grew up in the city and attended St. Frances Academy, a Catholic high school, where she played basketball. During her high school career, she has named a Parade All-American and McDonald’s All-American and set the school’s all-time scoring record with 2,228 points.

After graduating from high school, McCoughtry attended the University of Louisville, where she played college basketball for the Louisville Cardinals. During her four-year college career, she became the school’s all-time leading scorer and was named the Big East Conference Player of the Year twice. She also earned multiple All-American honors and was a finalist for the Naismith College Player of the Year award. After college, McCoughtry was selected first overall in the 2009 WNBA Draft by the Atlanta Dream, marking the journey of her professional career.

 

Career Background

McCoughtry began her professional career when she was selected first overall by the Atlanta Dream in the 2009 WNBA Draft. She played for the Dream for nine seasons, from 2009-18.

In her first season with the Dream, McCoughtry was named the WNBA Rookie of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team. She quickly established herself as one of the top players in the league and was named a WNBA All-Star for the first time in 2010. She would go on to be named an All-Star six times in total and was also named to the All-WNBA First Team twice.

McCoughtry led the Dream to the playoffs in each of her nine seasons with the team and helped the team reach the WNBA Finals three times. She also won the WNBA scoring title twice, in 2010 and 2013. Furthermore, In 2018 McCoughtry was traded to the Las Vegas Aces. She has played for the Aces since then, leading the team to the WNBA Finals in 2019.

In addition to her WNBA career, McCoughtry has also represented the United States in international competitions. She won gold medals at the 2010 and 2018 FIBA World Cups, and the 2012 Olympics.

Throughout her career, McCoughtry has been recognized for her exceptional play and her impact on the game. She is a six-time WNBA All-Star, two-time WNBA scoring champion, and two-time All-WNBA First Team member.
