Betnijah Laney is a professional basketball player from Clayton, Delaware. She plays as a forward for the New York Liberty of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Laney played college basketball at Rutgers University, where she was a three-time All-Big Ten selection. In her WNBA career, Laney has been known for her versatility and her ability to contribute in multiple areas of the game.

Career Background.

Laney began her basketball career at an early age. As a senior she averaged 23.7 points, 10 points, 4.4 steals, 4.3 assists as well as 1.2 blocks per game. Laney was named in McDonald’s All-American. She completed her high school career playing 129 games with 107 starts as well as averaging 10.9 points,  7.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.

Laney played 32 games as a freshman year where averaging 6 points per game and made it to the Big East All-Freshman Team. In her sophomore year, she played in 30 games and spent an average of 31 minutes on the court, and finished the season averaging 9.7 points per game. As a junior, Laney played in 35 games to end the season with 11.8 points per game.

In addition to her, career Laney was named to the Second-team All-ACC. She improved her stats played in 32 games and end her senior year by averaging 15.8 points per game and she was named into the First-team All-Big Ten.

The Chicago Sky Selected Laney with the 17th overall pick in the 2015 WNBA draft and in her rookie season playing for the Chicago Sky, averaging 2.8 points as well as 2.1 rebounds in 33 games. Furthermore, Laney signed with the Perth Lynx for the 2015-16 WNBL season.

Laney returned to the Chicago Sky for the 2016 WNBA season though on 8th June she was ruled out for the rest season after tearing her left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). In 2018, she signed a training camp deal with the Connecticut Sun. Laney was named to the WNBA-All-Defensive Team after her breakout season in 2020 with the Atlanta Dream. Moreover, she won the Most Improved Player Award, and in 2021 Laney signed with the New York Liberty.
