Bruno Fernandes is a Portuguese football star who currently plays for Manchester United, a Premiere league Club as an attacking midfielder. In addition, in international football, he plays for Portugal national team. His journey to becoming one of the loved players in the world started in Italy after joining Novara, a Serie B club. After that, he moved to Udinese, a Serie A club in 2013. In 2016 he transferred to Sampdoria.

Bruno spent five years of his career in Italy after which he returned to his country and signed with Sporting CP in 2017. With Sporting CP he was named as the captain of the club. In addition, he was also named Primeira Liga Player of the year, after winning back-to-back Tacas da Liga in 2018 and 2019. Moreover, during 2018-19, he became the highest-scoring Portuguese midfielder and the highest-scoring midfielder in Europe. As a result of his magnificent performance, he attracted the attention of some big clubs in the Premiere club and finally being signed by Manchester with a transfer fee worth €55 million (£47 million) in January 2020. The amount was the second-highest paid for a Portuguese player coming from a home league.

Professional career

His professional career begun At Novara Calcio, an Italian club playing in Serie B. He joined the team on 27 August 2012. Since he was still young with fewer skills, he joined as a youth player. His efforts in the youth team led to his promotion to the first team after few weeks. He played more than half of the league games during the 2012-13 season.

Move to Udinese

After playing for a Serie B club for one season, in the summer of 2013, he decided to join Udinese, a Serie A club in a co-ownership deal. He made his first debut for the club on 3rd November against Inter Milan in a 0-3 defeat. One month later he scored his first goal for the club in a 3-3 draw against SSC Napoli.


Bruno moved to U.C Sampdoria on 16th August 2016 after playing for Udinese for three years. However, his move to Sampdoria was on loan with an option of being signed permanently. He made his first debut for Sampdoria on 28th August, 12 days after his arrival. In his first debut, he only played for six minutes against Atalanta BC. One month later, he scored his first goal for Sampdoria on 26th September in a 1-2 defeat against Cagliari Calcio. Prior to moving to Sporting CP, he had made 33 appearances with 5 goals.

Moving to Sporting CP

Bruno returned to Portugal and joined Sporting CP on June 27th, 2017. With Sporting CP he signed a five-year contract with a transfer fee worth €8.5 million-plus bonuses. After his debut, he scored four goals in his first five Primeira Liga games. He made his first appearance in the UEFA Champions League was on 12th September and scored in the 43rd minute in a 3-2 win against Olympiacos.

On 6th July 2018, he was named as the Primeira Liga Player of the year, despite his team finishing in third place. On 10th July 2018, he signed a five-year contract with a €100 million release clause. However, he had initially planned to leave the club after the club’s president Bruno de Carvalho. During the 2018-19 season, he scored his 23rd competitive goal surpassing Antonio Oliveira’s club’s record of goals scored by midfielders. He scored his first hat-trick for Sporting CP on 5th May 2018 in an 8-1 away against Belenenses SAD. On May 25th, 2019 he scored his 33rd goal and his final in that season. In addition, during the following season 2019-20 season he scored 7 goals in 10 appearances. With this record, he became the third Sporting CP player to score in six consecutive appearances.

Manchester United

Fernandes moved to Manchester United on 29 January 2020, with a transfer fee worth €80 million (£67.6 million) according to reports. However, the transfer was completely done on 30th January with an initial transfer fee worth  €55 million (£47 million).In addition, the contract also had an additional €25 million (£21 million) in add-ons and 10% of the profits should United ever sell Fernandes. With Manchester, he signed a five and half-year contract.

He made his first debut for Manchester United on 1st February playing in a full game against Wolverhampton Wanderers. On 23rd February, he scored his first goal for Manchester United in a 3-0 victory at Old Trafford. In addition, still in the same game, he provided an assist for the third goal by Mason Greenwood. Moreover, Bruno scored his first European goal for Manchester United, during the UEFA Europa League round of 32 against Club Brugge.

Some of the awards included Premier League Player of the Month and Goal of the Month. In addition, he also became the first player to win both awards concurrently in Premier League history. In international football, he plays for Portugal’s national team.
