He fell in love with basketball when he was a young lad but rose to fame when playing Varsity basketball at Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone as a sophomore. The young Smith averaged 24.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 2.8 points per game.
He then went ahead and led his team to the Class 3A state runner-up finish in his senior year. This was after he averaged 24 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 blocks per game.
As a result of his tantalizing talent, he was named the Mr. Georgia Basketball Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution All- Classification Player of the Year. In addition, he was also selected to the rosters for the McDonald’s All-American Game, Jordan Brand Classic, and Nike Hoop Summit. Moreover, he completed the Antlat Celtics on the Amateur Union circuit.
Recruiting and College Career
In 2021 he was one of the best players and at the same time a consensus five-star recruit. As he was approaching to join college he was offered different offers from Georgia, LSU, Tennesse, Georgia Tech, and North Carolina. Despite all of these offers he committed to play for Auburn, where he was ranked as the highest player to commit to Auburn in the modern recruiting era.
Smith Jr. made his college debut against Morehead State in a 77-54 victory for the Tigers. He recorded his career season-high of 25 points on January 11, 2022.
When it comes to the National team he represented the United States at the 2019 FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship in Belem, Brazil. At the tournament, he averaged 13.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game and helped his team win the gold medal.
