Michael Olunga alias Football Engineer is one of the best Kenyan footballers and is regarded as one of the best strikers not only in Kenya but in all countries he has played for professionally. His hard work and determination have seen him sow greater heights, becoming one of the best footballers in the world.

The scoring machine started conquering in local games before landing in Sweden and later went to China, Japan, and now Qatar.  In all those countries he has not only proved his capability but he made sure he left a mark in all the teams he landed in.

Olunga established his name on the football map when he landed in Kashiwa Reysol. He finished the 2020 season as the top scorer in the Japanese J1 League, scoring 28 goals. As a result, he won the Golden Boot, he also went ahead and won the J-league MVP, becoming the first African player to win the J-league MVP.

Early Life/ Career

The veteran footballer was raised in Lakisama, Nairobi to a humble family who didn’t have much. He is the son of Joseph Oganda Olunga and Alice Oganda, he lost his father at the age of 7 years and he has been raised by a single mother.

His passion and love for football began at a very young age playing with other kids in unbuilt plots.

While he was still a student at Upper Hill Secondary he got a chance to join one of the best football academies in Kenya, Liberty Academy. Being one of the best he led his school all the way to the nationals and as usual, he finished as the top scorer becoming one of the most important players in the Nairobi title.

While in the Academy he was loaned to Tusker in 2012, for a year and later went to Thika United both playing in the Kenya Premier League (KPL).

He began his schooling at Baba Dogo Primary school and then proceeded to Upper Hill Secondary. Despite being perfect in the field he is also sharp-minded as he scored a clean A- in his Secondary school education.

After his good performances in high school education, he was admitted to the Technical University of Kenya to pursue a degree in Geospatial Engineering. Despite making it into the world of football he never drop his education as he knows the importance of education in one’s life.

Professional Career

He began his professional career with KPL giants Gormahia in 2015. He finished the season as the club’s top scorer with 19 goals helping the club win a record 15th league title unbeaten.

In 2016, he landed an opportunity to play outside Kenya, joining Djurgarden IF on a four-year contract. He went ahead and proved he was the best fit for the job after he scored two goals in August against IFK earning him the title of the man of the match.

The engineer scored 12 goals in 12 matches earning a top-five position in the Allsveska top score table. On top of that, he was nominated as the Newcomer of the Year in Swedish football.

After one year with the Swedish club, he moved to China where he joined Guizhou Zhicheng in 2017. However, he never played for the club as he was sent to Girona, a La Liga club on a one-year loan.

Olunga joined Girona in September 2017, despite joining the club in 2017 he made his official debut in January 2018. In his debut, he made history after he became the first Kenyan to score a hat-trick in a La-Liga league.

After his on loan season ended with Girona he never returned to Guizhou Zhicheng, he moved to Japan. In Japan, he joined Kashiwa Reysol, in August 2018.  At the end of 2019, he surprised the world after he score eight goals in one game in a 13-1 win against Kyoto Sanga.

After finishing as the Champion of the J2 season he was promoted to the first division. He went ahead and performed extremely well in the J2 season,  finishing the season as the top scorer in the 2020 Japanese J1 League with 28 goals. He also won the Golden Boot and the J-League 2020 MVP, becoming the first African to win the J-League MVP award.

Before the end of 2020, there were speculations that he was going to leave the Japanese club to join a Qatarian Club. In January 2021 the rumors were confirmed after he signed a three-year deal with Al-Duhail worth a transfer fee of €6 million.

Olunga went ahead and made his debut 12 days after he was signed in, scoring a hat-trick in a 6-0 triumph against Al Ahli in the Emir of Qatar Cup. Since he joined the club he has been developing and shaping his skills and we hope before he retires he will have the chance to conquer the whole world.

The football star is in a serious relationship though he has not revealed the name of his girlfriend. However, according to him, the two have known each other since 2005 since they were neighbors.
