The El Mahalla El Kubra native began his career at the age of five in 1997 joining a local football academy by the name of Al Ahly, owned by Al Ahly Sporting Club. He played most of his youth career at Al Ahly before moving to Al Mokawloon in 2008.

At Mokawloon he began as a youth player and two years later he was promoted to the senior team in 2010 after he exhibited the right quality to fit into the senior team. In 2013 he was sent to Basel on loan but the Swiss-based club ended up being attracted by his style of play and decided to hand him a permanent contract after his on-loan contract lapsed.

When he arrived at the club’s camp he helped the club win the Championship title and also finish as runners-up in the Swiss Cup. After signing a four-year contract with the club, he went on to help the team win the 2013-14 season Champions League season.

His first season was successful and it was followed by another successful season, the 2014-15 season, helping the team win their sixth championship and finished as runner-up in the Swiss Cup for the third time in a row.

After a whole year at Besiktas, Elneny made his return in August 2020 making it to the starting squad of the 2020 FA Community Shield. Despite the invasion of Covid -19, Elneny the 2020 year was one of his best as he was voted as the runner-up of the Goal of the Month on Arsenal’s official website, and also, later on, won goal of the season.
