Who Is Trae Young?

Trae Young is an American Professional basketball player for the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basket Association (NBA). Prior to his draft in 2018, he was playing college basketball for the Oklahoma Sooners.

In 2017, he made history after he became the only player to top the National Collegiate Association (NCAA) Division 1. He led in both points and assist in a single season earning the name of “Ice Trae“.

Young was born in Lubbock, Texas to Candice and Rayford Young. Young followed his father’s footsteps who was also a basketball player at Texas Tech and to proceeded to Europe to play professionally.

He also has a younger brother named Tim, and two younger sisters, Caitlyn and Camryn. In addition, he has an uncle who also played college basketball in the NAIA.

Despite being young he has accumulated a net worth of $25 million. As of the 2020-21 season, he was earning a total salary of $ 6,571,800. For the 2021-22 season, he will be earning a total earning of $ 8,326,471.

In 2021, he signed a max all rookies extension worth $ 173 million. However, it may increase up to $ 207 million if he makes an All-NBA Team this season. 


Recently, he signed a multi-million deal with Adidas which will see him earn $ 1.8 million per year. Other brands that he endorses include the Lens, Old Spice, Bodyarmor, Tissot, Chipotle, eBay, Fortnite, and NBA2K. Young earn approximately $ 3.5 million in endorsements. 


College Career

After graduating from Norman North High school he secured a place at the University of Oklahoma. During the recruitment period, he was ranked as a five-star recruit. Becoming the first to be ranked in that position since 2010.

He made his debut for the Oklahoma Sooners on 12th November 2017,  scoring 22 points and a season-high of 13 assists three days later. On November 26th, he showed an outstanding performance after recording a season-high of 43 points and seven assists.

As a result of his spectacular performance during the game, he left most people comparing him to Stephen Curry in his style of play.

At the end of his regular freshman season, he was topping the country in many assists. He had recorded 271 assists, 848 points, 27.4 points per game, 8.7 assists per game, and 48.6 % of assist percentage.

Having scored a total point of 848 in the Big 12, he broke the conference’s record of most points scored by a freshman. Initially, the record wa held by Kevin Durant and Michael Beasley.

In 2018, Oklahoma was failed to qualify for the 2018 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. As a result, Tray declared his intention to join the NBA draft and forgo his three college seasons.

Professional Career

Young Tray was picked with the fifth overall pick on June 21, 2018, by the Dallas Maverick in the 2018 NBA draft. However, he was traded to Atlanta Hawks the following months in exchange for the right to the third overall pick Luka Doncic.

Young signed officially with the Hawks on July 1st, 2018. Before the end of the 2020-19 season, he broke his own record after he recorded a career-high of 49 points and 16 assists.

Young scored 38 points in the Hawks season opener on October 24th, 2019 against Detroit Pistons. The following year Young was selected for the NBA All-Star selection as a backcourt starter on January 23, 2020. Three days after his selection he recorded 45 points and 14 assists.

On February 20th, he scored a career-high of 50 points after crushing Miami Heat 129-124. In the following season, he scored 37 points, 7 assists and, 6 rebounds in the season opener.  Young made his NBA playoff debut on May 23rd, 2021, scoring 32 points, 7 rebounds, and 10 assists.

With 32 points he joined other veteran basketball players like  LeBron James, Chris Paul, and Derrick Rose as the only players in the league history to ever score over 30 points and 10 assists.  On January 27th, 2022, he was selected again for the NBA All-Star Game once again as a backcourt starter.

National Team Career

Away from NBA, he plays for the United States National Team.  He was part of the squad that represented the US men’s national U-18 team at the 2016 FIBA Americas U-18 Championship. The team managed to win a gold medal at the end of the competition.

Trae Young Engagement and Girlfriend

He is engaged to his long-time girlfriend Shelby Miller. The two met way back while still studying at Oklahoma College. The two got engaged in 2021, Shelby took it to her Social Media accounts expressing her happiness.
