Who is Michael Essien?
Michael Essien, born Michael Kojo Essien is a Ghanaian football legend who played as a midfielder for huge clubs including Chelsea, Lyon, Real Madrid, and other prominent teams in Europe. Internationally he played for the Ghana National team where he made over 50 appearances and scored nine goals.
During his era, he was regarded as one of the top-notch midfielders, and clubs were thirsting for his services. He played professionally for two decades before he decided to hang his playing boots and wear the coaching boots in 2020.

Career as a footballer
Essien began his career in his home country in 1998 playing for the Liberty Professional youth team, one of the biggest teams in Ghana. In 2000, the got an opportunity to fly to France to pursue his dreams, where he joined a League 2 team called Bastia.
With Bastia, he made over 60 appearances and scored 11 goals in three seasons from 2000 to 2003. Following his impressive performance at Batia, he got the attention of Ligue 1 giants, Lyon FC and in 2003 he was officially signed by Lyon.
The Accra native rose to prominence when he joined Lyon winning back-to-back league titles clinching the 2003-04 season and the 2004-05 titles. Being on top of his game at that time Essien won the 2005 Ligue 1 Player of the Year.
He played for the team for only two seasons which was very productive for him and for the team. After five years in France, in 2005 Essien moved to London to join Chelsea, one of the biggest premier league clubs. At the time Chelsea acquired him with a transfer fee totaling £24.4 million, becoming the most expensive player in African history at that time.
Following his move, Essien made Chelsea his home and did massive things with the club, and created a reputable name for himself. The legend played for the blues for nine years from 2005-14, becoming his only club to ever play for over three seasons. For the nine years he played for Chelsea he made 168 appearances and scored 17 goals. However, within this stint, he was sent to Real Madrid on a long-season loan where he spent his 2012-13 season.
After Chelsea, he signed a six-month contract with Milan in January 2014 and made 20 appearances without a goal. In June 2015 he moved to Panathinaikos signing a two-year contract that made him one of the highest-paid footballers in Greek with an annual salary of €800,000.
In March 2017 he moved to Persib Bandung, an Indonesian club, signing a one-year contract with and the option of extending the contract. After his one-year contract lapsed the team released him in March 2018 and one year later he joined Sabail FK where he retired in 2020.
After his retirement as a player in 2020, the same year it was confirmed that he was training with a Danish Superliga club FC Nordsjaelland. The team is affiliated with Right to Dream Academy in Ghana and that’s why Essien found it easier to work with the club.
However, he is not yet the head coach but he works with the coaching team and he sharpens his coaching skills.
